Police Requested To Probe Fire On Board Ferry Goundar Shipping Limited managing director, George Goundar

An early Friday morning fire on board the Lomaiviti Princess 1 has left Goundar Shipping Limited managing director, George Goundar in shock.

He suspects arson by one of the ferry’s own crew members and had requested Police to investigate the suspected arson inside the Lomaiviti Princess 1 at Port Mua-i-Walu.

The fire had started in the Radio Room at the Wheel house of the ferry at around 2am on Friday after it docked at the port. Two crew members were responsible for preventing the fire from escalating any further.

Only the crew were on board at the time, cleaning the ferry after it had arrived from Kadavu. Services of the Lomaiviti Princess 1 have since been halted.

“I understand that the fire was set and that it was done by one of my own crew members, who had stolen from our ferry and his act was recorded on camera,” Mr Goundar suggested.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro confirmed receiving the complaint.
