A 19-year-old appeared in the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday charged with one count of sacrilege.
The accused, Suliano Wainivanua, allegedly broke into the place of worship, namely the Vishnu Bhavan Temple, with intent to commit theft therein.
The alleged incident occurred between January 15 to 16 this year.
The temple security guard discovered the alleged break-in at around 5:45am on January 16, 2018 and the matter was reported to the Police.
Police Prosecutor Constable Setareki Mocevakaca objected to the accused’s bail on the grounds that the case was of public interest.
Wainivanua was given the option to be tried in the High Court or the Nasinu Magistrates Court, to which he opted to be tried in the Magistrates Court.
The case was adjourned to February 23, 2018, for his bail to be heard.
The accused was remanded in custody.
