We should accept the new norm, we should adapt and adopt and make the necessary changes.
These was emphasised by Fiji’s climate change champion and Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Office Inia Seruiratu.
He said this during a talanoa session on the key outcomes from COP23 which was held in Bonn, Germany last year.
“The new norm is that disasters is going to happen and it will always happen and the severity of these disasters have gone to a new level,” Mr Seruiratu said.
He was speaking to Anglican Church members from around the Pacific in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Reverend Justin Portal Welby. Mr Seruiratu stressed the need for people to take issues of climate change seriously.
“Our way of thinking, the way we see things, our paradigm must shift because if we take it lightly we will pay the prices.”
He stated that some have taken disaster warnings lightly however after the tragic incident of TC Winston people have now started to take weather warnings seriously.
“We must accept this things and must prepare better for the future.”
