SODELPA Member of Parliament Niko Nawaikula has not attended a single Justice, Law and Human Rights Committee meeting in the past two years.
This was revealed in Parliament by committee chairman and Government Whip, Ashneel Sudhakar.
While making his contribution on the Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill 2018 where he claimed that committees were not doing much in considering women and gender in their deliberations, Mr Nawaikula opened a can of worms.
“You have not attended a single committee meeting in two years Honourable Nawaikula. Don’t ask what the Committees are doing when you have not attended a single meeting of Justice, Law and Human Rights Committee in two years of which you are a member,” Mr Sudhakar said.
The normally vocal Opposition MP was left with no retort after he was ousted by Mr Sudhakar.
Adding salt to injury were comments by Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who called Mr Nawaikula out for not tabling a Bill focusing on women and gender in Parliament.
Mr Nawaikula shot himself in the foot by questioning why Government had not called for the amendment earlier, which allows women to work in mines.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Mr Nawaikula had brought up the Surfers Decree to Parliament but why did he not focus on women’s work rights himself?
