The Fiji Police recorded 2337 assault-related crimes and 342 sexual crimes last year.
This was stated by Assistant Commissioner of Police Itendra Nair during a press conference at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Thursday.
He said according to the latest crime statistics the most targeted age group for sexual crimes are 18 to 31-year-old.
“Women are not safe in our society regardless of their age,” Mr Nair said.
“87 per cent of women are physically assaulted and the offence that tops this category is assault causing extra body harm.
“Offences that are high in the sexual crime category are; indecently insulting or annoying any person followed by indecent assault and rape.”
He said crime against women even includes female tourists.
“The Fiji police in its effort to eliminate gender-based violence has a very important key performance indicator which addresses the reduction of violence against women and children by 10 per cent.
“This encompasses sexual assaults, aggravated assaults resulting from robberies or house invasions, domestic violence related crimes, etc.
“The Fiji police have a No-drop policy and zero tolerance approach to investigating and dealing with complaints from women and children victims of crime,” Mr Nair said.
“Complaints lodged with the police force are handled by priorities.”
