Thirteen people from a house in Suva are now without clothes and belongings after the home they were living in was destroyed in a fire early yesterday morning.
The home in High Street, Toorak, was ablaze around midnight, leaving just visible remnants of its foundation structure, charred from the inferno.
The quick-thinking of Krishneel Kirtesh Lal saved the rest of the tenants and landlord who were asleep. A total of 13 people including the landlord and his family were living in the house.
The 23-year-old said he heard a cry for help around midnight by one of his female flatmates from the kitchen.
He then woke up his other flatmates and the landlord. The home had seven bedrooms, five kitchens and one living room.
Mr Lal said the tenants were sharing the house with their owner.
“We have lost everything in the fire, totaling to about $500,000,” Mr Lal said.
“The only thing I have left right now is my clothes that I am wearing from last night. I have lost everything. I even left behind my mobile phone in the fire.
“As soon as we saw the fire, we called the fire truck and we even tried to extinguish it with water ourselves.”
The National Fire Authority is investigating the cause of the fire.
