A senior officer of the Ministry of the iTaukei Affairs has been removed from its office in Nasese for abuse of office.
This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by Naipote Katonitabua the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the iTaukei Affairs.
“I can confirm to you that a senior officer has been removed from our office in Nasese for abuse of office,” he said.
He said the Prime Minister and Minister for i-Taukei Affairs Voreqe Bainimarama had been briefed on the case.
The officer concerned he said had been warned several times but did not respond positively to the warnings.
Mr Katonitabua said in the latest case the officer was given money two months before an event started.
The money he said was for a traditional welcome ceremony as the officer was always responsible for such events in the ministry.
“When the women asked for the mats, old ones were given to them so the ministry had to intervene and new mats for another ceremony were used.”
The officer he said had made false promises to the officers who were involved in the traditional welcome ceremony.
“He promised that they would get rewarded, but this never happened.”
Mr Katonitabua said the ministry had a zero tolerance on abuse of office and officers had been reminded about it.
Speaking at the opening of the Provincial Council Treasurer’s workshop at Nadave last month he said that in the past two years the Board had terminated five officers due to abuse of funds.
