A Ba family have survived what could have been a horrific accident when a truck carrying two shipping containers loaded with mineral water veered off the road and landed in a drain beside their house.
It partially damaged the porch.
Three adults and five children were inside the house when the incident happened yesterday.
Miriama Savui, 28, a mother of four, recalled the event as ‘shocking’ because it happened at around 4.30am.
“We were sleeping in the sitting room when we’re woke up by the sound of the ‘big bang’ and a screeching sound of a vehicle applying its brakes,” she said.
“The first thing that came in my mind was to count the five children first. And it was dark, but when we came out to the front we notice the heavy smoke from the truck engine.
“My brother managed to switch off the ignition.
“I told myself if it was not for the drain the container would have fallen on our bodies and it would be the end. Thanks to God! We are fortunate to be alive.”
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident.
“There were no casualties and no serious injuries. The driver is yet to be questioned; he was complaining of body pains though,” she said.
