Sound advice from dad and grandfather has paved the way for Adesh Pillay, the headboy of Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC) in Nadi.

The Year 13 student along with headgirl Atasha Prakash and 100 prefects were badged during the school’s induction ceremony last Friday.

“My father, who is the BSP Nadi branch manager, had taught me leadership skills and how to fulfil my responsibilities with respect to my studies,” Adesh said.

“Also my grandfather {Tata} who is a farmer has taught me the meaning of hard work and how to overcome struggles in life.

“I am blessed and honoured to be headboy of such a prestigious college. I am delighted and excited to be holding a position of responsibility.”

The 17-year-old expected his appointment since being part of the student council for the past four years.

“It is important to me since leadership values will help me gain more confidence. I like to perform all responsibilities with dedication and honesty. I will be working to the best of my ability and will uphold the name of SSKMC,” he said

Headgirl Atasha Prakash, 18, of Nawaicoba shared similar sentiments.

“It is an honour and privilege for me to be the headgirl of such a renowned college,” she said.

“It is a proud moment for me to uphold such a big responsibility and lead the Sangam leaders of 2018. It is an important and prestigious role for me because I always had the dream of becoming the headgirl.”

She has been a prefect since Year Nine at the college.

“I believe that when you have an aim and interest in something you can achieve it. It’s important to have teamwork to complete a task,” the headgirl said.

“A leader is someone whom the students can trust.”

Chief guest at the event was former headgirl Shirani Sonika, who is a lawyer by profession and does her practice with Krishna & Associates.
