A 66-year-old National Federation Party provisional candidate is in police custody at Nasinu after a rape allegation.
It is alleged the man raped a widow on Thursday night.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro yesterday said: “A 66-year-old of Nadi was arrested on the 28th of June for allegedly raping a 53-year-old woman in her home in Nasinu.
“It is alleged the suspect had asked to rest at the victim’s home after attending a wedding in Suva.
“The victim lives alone and after 9pm it is alleged the suspect turned up at the victim’s residence and asked if he could sleep because he was tired.
“It is alleged that the victim was inside her room when the suspect knocked on her bedroom door where he forced himself on her.
“He is alleged to have assaulted her before raping her.
“The victim later managed to free herself and locked herself in the bathroom where she raised alarm,” Ms Naisoro said.
Earlier yesterday officers from Valelevu escorted the suspect for further treatment because he was complaining of body pains.
He is being kept in custody at the Valelevu Police Station as investigations continue.
On the day the NFP announced his provisional candidacy he had said that: “I believe in the policies of the National Federation Party and believe that it is the change that this country needs.”
