Over 400 flights have been canceled at two Chicago airports by noon on Monday, as up to six inches of additional snow is expected to hit the US city in late afternoon, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

More than 400 flights have proactively been canceled at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, and more than 20 flights at Midway airport.

A winter weather advisory for three to six inches of snow area-wide is in effect until midnight Tuesday for much of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, according to the National Weather Service.

After hovering around zero with chilly winds in the morning, the temperature will drop below minus 15 Celsius degrees in the evening.

On Sunday, the Chicago area saw around one to two inches of snow, and slippery conditions resulted in dozens of crashes in suburban area.
