Lebanese President Michel Aoun said Friday that fighting corruption will be the first priority of the new government, local media reported.

"We have adopted a strategy for the fight against corruption to be implemented upon the formation of the new government," he was quoted by Elnashra, an independent online newspaper.

Aoun said that the strategy includes administrative and structural reforms.

His remarks came during his meeting with a delegation from the General Labor Union headed by Bechara El Asmar.

"Some people voice their commitment to fighting against corruption, but when the time for implementation comes, they do just the opposite," said Aoun. "We want to see who will really commit to this goal."

He also called upon the General Labor Union to take part in the reform process.

Meanwhile, Asmar called for the formation of a new government to deal with the economic challenges facing the country including the housing loans crisis, electricity shortage and high unemployment rate.

Asmar also called for the necessity to make changes to salaries in the private sector in addition to approving social security laws and environmental projects.

"We also emphasize the need to support agriculture and industry sectors by preventing unfair competition from other countries," he said.
